  9. Halogen lights burning out too quickly?

    Some time ago, I bought a set of quartz halogen lights for my aquarium. About a week later, one of the 5 bulbs burned out. I figured it was just a bad bulb, so i just bought a new bulb replacement. but since then, three more have burned out also. I checked the voltage, which seemed to be about 6-8VAC. the bulbs are rated for 12V 5W. WHY should they keep burning out like this???

    I've got halogen spotlights all around the apartment, but they dont give off a direct beam, they just tend to give a general light. I want my lighting to be like in a posh retail store where you have little beams aimed at the floor and at certain walls. What am I doing wrong???
